    Cathodic electrophoretic dip coating

The favoured choice in vehicle construction:

Wherever corrosion protection by way of surface treatment is concerned, cathodic electrophoretic dip coating, also known as ‘cataphoresis’, is the procedure which is used the most. This is particularly true in vehicle construction due to the fact that often complicated structures and larger number of pieces need to be treated.

    The procedure:

Cathodic electrophoretic dip painting (EDP) is an electrochemical painting procedure. The items to be painted are immersed in an electrically conductive aqueous dipping paint and an organic coating is applied onto the items to be painted using a direct current onto a conductible, predominantly metal substrate. When the paint particles are stabilised with a positive charge, they depose at the cathode (unlike with anodic EDP). The basic principle of electrophoretic dip painting is to precipitate a water-soluble binder on the surface of the item to be painted which is charged as electrode in order to generate a closed, adhesive coating of paint. An environmentally friendly lead-free water-based paint is used in cathodic electrophoretic dip painting, which forms an exceptionally even coating of paint over the entire surface of the workpiece.

The behaviour when penetrating hollow spaces is characteristic of cathodic EDP. This, not least, explains its success in the vehicle industry. Because now the bodies of entire buses are painted using the electrophoretic dip painting procedure.

    The pretreatment:

Before the actual cathodic EDP a low zinc phosphating process is carried out which ensures the required cleanness of the surface and the construction of a coating of bonding agent between the workpiece and coat.

    The advantages:

Some advantages of cathodic electrophoretic dip painting are the improved corrosion protection, a better coating in hollow spaces, high process safety and thin coating.

The substrates aluminium, steel and galvanised steel can be treated.
